Rag Quilt

I made this Rag Quilt for a friend who just had a little boy
(let's hope she doesn't see my blog til I give it to her)

First I started by picking out my fabric. I happened to find these two coordinating cotton fabrics at JoAnns in the clearence section. I bought 1/2 yard of each and only paid $5! I had some extra blanket fleece (cream color) but not quite enough so my cousin donated some of hers (Thanks MJ!) and I bought 1 yard of the pretty blue Minky and it happened to be on sale for $10/yd instead of the usual $15 (plus the lady at check out used her 15% off coupon instead of my 10%) so the minky only cost me $9 with tax! So this came out pretty inexpensive for me! Yeah!

The first thing I did was cut my cotton fabric (or you can use flannel) into 6" squares. If you have more than 1 fabric, lay them out into the desired pattern on the table.
Then I cut my Fleece into 5" squares
And third I cut my Minky into 6" squares

This picture is my cotton layed out how I wanted it to look as the finished product. I tried lying my striped fabric all the same way but didn't like the look, so I just altered my pattern

Flip over your cotton (or flannel) fabric and sandwich your squares together

Flip them over and start sewing each square in an "X" shape (you can do this by making a long chain) Then lay it back out in your desited pattern cotton side up

Then sew 1 row together at a time using 1/2" seams with your seams facing out. You can see how it will shrink as you sew the rows together

Then sew your rows together, again with your seams facing out.

This is the blanket finished before I cut the seams. Becareful NOT to cut through the thread or your squares will come appart
Finished blanket after it's been washed and dried (that will make the cut edges get fluffy and pretty)
