Coffee Filter Flowers

 

I made some coffee filter flowers for my friends baby sprinkle as decoration. They turned out so pretty that people thought they were real and tried to smell them :)

 

I watched LOTS of tutorials on how to make these, and I kind of combined them together to make them simple. It takes 8-10 filters to make one flower. I used 8 in mine.

• The supplies needed are of course plain white coffee filteres. I used the 8-10 cup ones, and bought them from the dollar store.
• regular food color
• white vinegar
• some type of large bowl or those throw away tin containers.
• wax paper (so the food color doesn't destroy your counter top).
• paper towels (over the wax paper to soak up water).
• And/or a cookie cooling rack
• Some of the tutorials said to use wood skewers, but I couldn't find any with points so I used bamboo shish kabob skewrs from walmart. I got 100 for less than $1.00.
• Floral wire. Bought from Hobby Lobby in the silk flower section.
• Floral Tape
• Scisors
• And I used my Stampin' Up! poker and pad to make the holes to insert the skewer and floral wire.
• Optional: Hot glue gun.                                                                                              
 

 
 I forgot to take pictures of the dying of the filters. I'll take some and post them soon!
Fill your bowl with water and add food color til desired color. Add a cap full of the vinegar to the water. It helps the dying process move a long faster. Just remember that the coffee filters will be lighter than the color in the bowl, however they will be slightly darker when they finish drying.
 
Seperate the filters before you put them into the water. You can put several filters in the bowl at a time, I do 8-12. The ones in the middle may be a little lighter so just put them back in and leave them a little longer. I leave mine in for about 10-15 minutes, it just depends on how dark you want them.
I made pink, peach, lavander, and yellow
 
Fold them into quarters and with your scisors, scallop your edges. I cut about 4 at a time.

 Stack 8-10 of your filters on top of each other in the desired color combination. I used mostly yellow in the center, so that went on top.

I used my Stampin Up! paper piercing tool and made 3 holes in the center

 (where you folded them you will see the center)

 

On the two outside holes insert your floral wire. Make sure your ends are even.

 

Insert your bamboo skewer in the center. Wrap your floral wire around it.

 

 

 Start pulling your and scrunching the filters one by one. 

 

None of the tutorials said to use hot glue, But i did just at the base of the flower to make it a little more secure. This is optional.

Wrap your entire skewer and floral wire in floral tape. It will be sticky, I was out of baby powder so I lightly used corn starch to make un-stickey them, and wiped it off.

 

Carefully pull down the filters to seperate the petals and make them fluffy.
